Is CBD Right for Me?

We think so, and here's why.

Your body is yours and nobody else’s, and you know what’s right for you because it feels good. You want the best for yourself, and you’re going to do whatever it takes to get it. You may be an avid CBD enthusiast, or used CBD before without results and want to try again, or are considering trying it for the first time but aren’t sure how to approach it. Wherever you come from, we want to help you understand the benefits of CBD and how it can help you to achieve your health goals, whatever they may be.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a key regulatory system in the body responsible for appetite, energy metabolism, pain, mood, memory, sleep, stress responses, central nervous system and immune health – or put more simply, helps us “relax, sleep, eat, forget and protect.” It is made up of feel good compounds, called endocannabinoids, that are made and degraded on demand by the body in response to stress in order to restore homeostasis (balance) by bonding to or otherwise influencing cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). This translates to being happy and healthy when our ECS is functioning properly, and is exactly why maintaining a healthy ECS is a critical part of our overall health.

What happens when our ECS is not producing enough endocannabinoids or the right balance of cannabinoid receptors? Endocannabinoid system imbalances can put you at risk for many chronic health conditions including obesity, diabetes, digestive disorders, chronic pain, cancer, epilepsy, mood disorders and cardiovascular diseases. Although genetic factors can influence how our ECS functions, our lifestyles are mostly to blame for a dysfunctional ECS.

How can we protect ourselves against an Endocannabinoid Deficiency?

Healthy lifestyle modifications such as eating healthier, exercising more and reducing stress are a great start. Foods such as fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and fatty fish are all great sources of nutrients that support a healthy ECS. Moderate exercise, stress relieving activities such as meditation, massage and yoga, and herbal medicines containing cannabinoid compounds, are also a great tools in your arsenal against ECS deficiency.

This is where CBD comes in.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid (plant cannabinoid) found in the Cannabis sativa L. plant (which includes both hemp and marijuana), as well as other plants in the Cannabaceae species such as hops. CBD helps the body to counteract endocannabinoid deficiencies by helping to increase levels of endocannabinoids by inhibiting the enzymes that break them down – keeping them available to your body for longer. CBD also increases CB2 receptor activity in immune cells (reducing inflammation) and stimulates non-cannabinoid receptors in the brain such as opiate receptors (involved in pain sensation), dopamine (reward behaviors associated with addiction), and serotonin (mood, sleep behaviors). This interconnection with neurotransmitters involved in pain and mood regulation enables CBD to help cultivate a healthy mind and body and greatly impact our overall mental and physical health.

The ability to support ECS health and its wide scope of health benefits makes CBD a great natural option for anyone with health issues stemming from endocannabinoid imbalances – from chronic inflammation and pain to migraines to irritable bowel syndrome to diabetes to anxiety and depression – and a must try addition to any healthy lifestyle.

For an in-depth look into the science behind the relationships between your health and lifestyle, we offer owner Sarah Laing’s book “You Aren’t Just What You Eat… But That’s Important Too", which details the impact of inflammation in the body on our health and the development of chronic disease and provides natural preventative solutions that target the inflammatory response.

The ECS can act as our best friend of worst foe, depending on which way we tip the scales. There are no magic pills, but we can use our knowledge of health and wellness to enhance our quality of life and healthy alternatives such as CBD to address functional imbalances and enhance our defenses against chronic disease…. providing you with Relief to Live Life to the Fullest.
